And this lineup for Bourbon County Stout is a worthy follow-up to last year's, which many deemed as Goose Island's best in years, seeing beers aged in extremely rare Old Forester Birthday Bourbon and Weller Year barrels.
The tradition of Bourbon County Stout has been around since when former brewmaster Greg Hall wanted to celebrate the 1,th batch of beer brewed at Goose Island, which Hall's father had founded. Just a year shy of its year anniversary, here is what you can find in this year's Bourbon County Stout lineup. The ale is a mix of imperial stouts aged in bourbon barrels form distilleries such as Heaven Hill, Wild Turkey and Buffalo Trace.
Goose Island says to expect flavors of "chocolate and vanilla, oak, whiskey and molasses, followed by caramel, berry fruit and almond. Goose Island took its original Bourbon County Stout, and, in an effort to amplify its wood notes, finished it with honeycomb-shaped cherry wood chips.
According to the brewery, "the versatility of the cherry wood and honeycomb shape allowed for maximum flavor extraction, revealing complex characteristics like red fruit, ripe cherry and light toffee, which are not found in the original oak barrel itself.
Besides the standard notes of chocolate and oak, the aging imparts the "warm aromatics of baking spices such as clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. Think any of those made their way into these blends? Scorchingly hot, unrelentingly boozy, massively oaky, big big big big big. Not to mention that that beer was so ridiculously limited it was almost barely worth discussing. Goose has been taking a series of weirdly successful swings at barrel—aged variants that few have messed with.
That sounds bonkers. I love it when Goose takes wild flights of fancy like these, and honestly, most of them work. Really looking forward to this one. We saw hundreds of people waiting for a 4oz pour while surrounded by dozens of other amazing barrel-aged options. They can also go very wrong. Will the roast and char and smoke of the BCS base play nicely with these flavors?
These toasted barrels are built to the same specifications as normal bourbon barrels, but are more heavily toasted and very lightly charred. The result? A Bourbon County Stout unlike any before.
In addition to the familiar chocolate, caramel, and vanilla comes flavors of toasted marshmallow and a very pronounced fruit and oak finish.
