Steven whyte sculpture carmel

He has a sculpture studio and gallery. Many of his sculptures are in public spaces in the United States and England. Whyte said that he has lived on the Monterey Peninsula longer than anywhere else.

He said it feels like home and that many more exciting things are in the works. Daniel Chester French has been a particular hero. Whyte taught at Stafford College where he co-wrote the first validated figurative sculpture course in the United Kingdom.

He relocated to the U. There is great history and tradition in our work. Whyte attributes the seeds of his success to a learning disability. His father was in the Royal Air Force , which meant he switched schools frequently. Art class was the one place where the syllabus never changed, and it became a sanctuary for Whyte.

As he neared high school graduation, he was a credit short, so he enrolled in ceramics. Something about the physicality of throwing clay, the tactile nature of it, soothed him. When the admissions director rebuffed the teenage Whyte and told him his portfolio was thin, Whyte furiously created 30 sculptures in a matter of weeks and reapplied.

He was accepted. Whyte later taught sculpture at Stafford College and wrote a sculpture textbook, then came to Monterey in to oversee an art project. He fell in love with the art-first ethos of the Monterey Peninsula, and also with a woman, and decided to stay.

He opened a studio first in Cannery Row, married the girl, and then relocated to Carmel in One of his favorite projects was his first commission in the United States. Two women from the Seaside Historical Commission approached him about making a monument to Seaside city founder John Roberts , a doctor who raced down Highway 1 in a horse and buggy in to save passengers from a shipwreck off Big Sur.

Whether his artwork is 12 inches or 10 feet tall, the steps to make it are basically the same since ancient India. First he sculpts the figure out of clay and pours a silicone rubber mold around it. Then he pours wax into the rubber mold to make a wax replica of his artwork.
